We have personally known three families who had devastating fires that destroyed their homes. What the fires didn't destroy, the water damage from the fire hoses did. One family had taken pictures of their possessions; however, the pictures were inside the house when it burned. Another kept a Sears catalog on hand to recollect items that were lost in the fire. The other family had to list everything right down to the Q-tips!
Two families we know had major thefts. One family mentioned they needed to document if their necklaces were 14k gold or 12k gold and if they were 12, 14, 18 (etc) inches long. They had no idea. The other family said they had some antique rings stolen, and were asked if they had descriptions, pictures, prices before they could settle with the insurance company. One family had a break-in in the garage. Their tools, lawn and garden things were taken. They didn't know where to begin in remembering what they actually kept in the garage.
These are true stories. We had a connection with these people and in the midst of emotional shock and discouragement there was a reality of loss. During each of those experiences it was difficult to identify what each had lost, both personally and emotionally.
Over the years as we talked with people about their personal experiences, the idea kept surfacing to start a business to document personal property if disaster struck. Because this "idea" kept getting stronger and would simply not go away over several years, we felt it was important to follow the dream of becoming entrepreneurs. People insure their homes, but do they really know what they are insuring?
